Rio Lago Ranch and Vineyard

Rio Lago, formerly River Pond Ranch, has been owned and managed by the Horowitz Family since 1990.  Originally a small cattle operation with twenty acres of Chardonnay and Zinfandel vineyard, Rio Lago has grown to become a 225 acre ranch and vineyard that includes 105 acres of premium quality wine grapes featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Chardonnay. We have sold to various award winning wineries including; Jordan, Kendall-Jackson, Draxton, Murphy-Goode, Alexander Valley, Windsor Sonoma, Vintage Wine Estates, and Napa’s distinguished Girard Winery.

In addition to our vineyards, we have a small fuji apple orchard, vegetable gardens, pastures for a few horses and Black Angus Cows, and a century old redwood hay barn. The ranch’s five acre pond, created in 1952, supplies water for our frost protection and irrigation.  The pond is stocked with large mouth bass and bluegill.  Rio Lago has over 700 feet of Russian River frontage making up our western border.  Most of the ranch’s water needs are supplied by a series of licensed wells along the banks of the river.  Water is also stored in our 10,000 gallon water tank located on a hilltop adjacent to our upper vineyards.  The Russian River is a natural habitat for steelhead trout and abundant wildlife.

Rio Lago is not a winery. The grapes grown in our vineyards are sold to a variety of highly respected Alexander Valley wineries and a few others. Each year we harvest, on average, 500 tons of grapes.  Our grapes are harvested with a French-made mechanical harvester.  Rio Lago uses no pesticides, uses few chemicals, and abides by sustainable farming practices.

While we are not open to the public, we welcome inquiries from wineries that are looking for high-quality wine grapes.

Welcome to Rio Lago!
